All tiers also pay a processing fee of RM5,000 for the main applicant and RM2,500 per dependant, plus a pass fee of RM500 a year and a visa fee that depends on your nationality. Minimum age is 25 for Platinum, Gold and Silver. Sarawak runs its own separate scheme (S-MM2H) with different rules.

Next step: check the minimum price a foreigner can pay in each state, which can be higher than the MM2H minimum.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need for MM2H?

The main cost is a fixed deposit in a Malaysian bank: USD 150,000 for Silver, USD 500,000 for Gold and USD 1,000,000 for Platinum. You must also buy a home (from RM600,000 for Silver) and pay the participation, processing and pass fees. There is no monthly income requirement any more.

Can I take money out of the fixed deposit?

Yes, up to 50% of it after approval, but only for buying your home, education, medical costs or travel within Malaysia. Some MOTAC documents say this is allowed only after one year, so confirm with the MM2H centre before planning on it.

Do I have to buy property?

Yes. Every tier requires you to buy a home at or above the tier minimum, and you cannot sell it for 10 years (you can upgrade to a more expensive one). State rules for foreign buyers still apply, so check the minimum price for your state too.

How long do I have to live in Malaysia each year?

If you are under 50, you (and your family together) must spend at least 90 days a year in Malaysia. From age 50 there is no minimum stay.

What is the Special Zone tier?

A cheaper tier for people who live in a special economic or financial zone. So far the only zone named is Forest City in Johor. You must buy a home there directly from the developer before the pass is issued. The RM500,000 minimum home price shown here comes from a Forest City guidance report, not an official page.

Who can I bring with me?

Your spouse, children under 21 (unmarried children up to 34 who do not work in Malaysia, and disabled children of any age) and your parents or parents-in-law. Each dependant adds a processing fee of RM2,500.

Does MM2H lead to permanent residence?

No. New MM2H participants are not eligible for permanent residence. The pass is renewable, and after the first term it can be renewed every five years.
